Repeated over extension of the lower back can irritate the lumbar joints and cause pain, stiffness and a loss of power generated through the golf swing.

Calves feeling heavy and tight? Adam has got you covered. Put some time aside each day to try these 3 easy exercises.

1. Calf release : foam roller (general release) and trigger ball (localised release) - 2 mins per leg
.
2. Straight knee (gastroc) calf raises : start with double leg and progress to single leg (performing on a step and focusing on the eccentric / lowering phase facilitates more muscle engagement) - 2x20reps
.
3. Bent knee (soleus) calf raises : able to progress to single leg as well, again focussing on the eccentric phase - 2x20reps
.
With a buddy is always better!

These four exercises can be used to help alleviate some of your neck pain and improve postural muscle strength.

Exercise 1: Chin tucks. Perform two sets of ten repetitions.

Exercise 2: Chin tuck with neck extension. Perform two sets of ten repetitions.

Exercise 3: Resistance band rows. Perform three sets of ten repetitions.

Exercise 4: W shoulder blade squeezes. Perform three sets of ten repetitions.

Goals of these exercises:

1. Improve your neck mobility by focusing on the reverse movement of your day to day posture.
.
2. Build strength and endurance in your upper back and neck muscles which may help with maintaining a more upright posture.
.

Spine rotation is crucial to allow you to get to the top of your back swing. Stiffness through the spine can lead to poor performance and injuries as the body will try and compensate for the lack of mobility.

In clinic we will perform tests to analyse if you lack rotation. Here are a few methods we can use to help restore your movement and strength.
.
Thoracic rotation: can be done upright or in the golf posture. Will allow greater rotation and allow you to get to the top of your swing.
.
Dry needling: to relieve muscle pain and reduce stiffness
.
Active release for the hips: to improve flexibility and function
.
Wood chop: a great way to strengthen your core whilst trying to build a powerful golf swing.
.

Meet Gareth! 👋🏼

Following the completion of a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science, Gareth moved into the fitness industry spending close to a decade working one on one with a broad range of clientele from junior sports athletes to older adults and developing a deep understanding of rehabilitation and exercise prescription 🏋🏽‍♀️

His experience is further cemented by a Masters in Exercise Science (Strength & Conditioning) along with being an accredited Level 2 strength and conditioning coach with the ASCA. Gareth returned to the University of Sydney to complete his Masters of Physiotherapy 📜, bringing with him his years of training and rehab experience in combination with diagnosis and manual therapy skills to provide the best outcomes for his patients.

Gareth loves all things movement and has a keen interest in Rugby League, American Football and snow sports. 🏈 🏂 💨
